Botswana in 2026: Africa's Most Stable Democracy, a Territorial Tax System, and a Diamond Economy at a Crossroads

Botswana has just done something almost no African country has: it passed a dual citizenship law, launched a Remote Work Visa (USD 3,000/month income threshold), and announced a Citizenship by Investment programme priced at USD 75,000-90,000 - all in the same 18-month window. A comfortable expat life in Gaborone costs USD 1,000-1,500/month, income tax tops out at 25%, and the territorial tax system means your foreign-sourced remote work income is - under the right structure - exempt.[1][2][3][4][5][6]

The catch: GDP contracted 3% in 2024 and another 0.9% in 2025 due to a prolonged crash in global diamond demand. The economy that made Botswana a development miracle - the most celebrated growth story in sub-Saharan Africa from 1966 to 2010 - is now structurally exposed and under active IMF scrutiny. The government knows it. The reforms above are partly a direct response: diversify revenue, attract talent and capital, stop relying on diamonds. For the right kind of expat, that transition is an opportunity.[7][8]

The Economy: Diamond Dependence, IMF Warning, and the Reform Window

Botswana's GDP is approximately BWP 280 billion (USD 20 billion), serving a population of 2.6 million. Per capita, it is one of the wealthiest countries in sub-Saharan Africa - but the numbers hide the structural problem.[9]

Source 2026 GDP Growth Forecast
IMF (2026 projection) 4.7% (post-contraction rebound)[9]
World Bank (January 2026) 2.3%[10]
Botswana Vice President (Budget Review) 3.1%[8]
2024 actual -3.0% contraction[10]
2025 actual (estimated) -0.9% contraction[10]

The divergence in forecasts matters. The IMF's more optimistic 4.7% is a post-contraction rebound scenario contingent on diamond market recovery and reform progress. The World Bank's 2.3% reflects more cautious assumptions on mineral sector normalisation. Neither scenario is a return to the 7-8% growth decades of the 1970s-2000s.[10]

What drives this economy:

  • Diamonds: ~80% of exports, ~30-40% of government revenue. Botswana-De Beers joint venture Debswana operates the world's richest diamond mines (Jwaneng, Orapa). The 2023-2025 crash in global diamond prices - driven partly by lab-grown diamond competition, partly by reduced Chinese consumer demand - triggered the worst economic contraction in Botswana's post-independence history. US tariffs on diamonds are an additional 2026 headwind[10][7]
  • Tourism: The Okavango Delta (UNESCO World Heritage Site), Chobe National Park, and the Central Kalahari Game Reserve make Botswana one of Africa's premium safari destinations. High-value, low-volume tourism policy - USD 500-1,500+/night camps deliberately limit visitor numbers to protect the ecosystem. Tourism's share of GDP is growing deliberately[7]
  • Financial services: Gaborone is a functional, regulated financial centre for the Southern Africa region. Standard Chartered, FNB, Stanbic, and Barclays operate full commercial banking. The Botswana Stock Exchange is small but functional
  • Manufacturing and agriculture (targeted for growth): Manufacturing is only ~5% of GDP - the IMF specifically flags this as far below regional peers. The government's Economic Diversification Drive specifically targets agro-processing, leather goods, jewellery manufacturing, and technology services[7]
  • The reform narrative: The Citizenship by Investment programme, Remote Work Visa, and dual citizenship legislation are not coincidental. They are a deliberate government strategy to attract high-value human and financial capital as diamond revenues decline. Whether this works in the next 5 years will determine whether Botswana pulls off its second economic transformation[4]

The governance edge: This matters for any serious investor or long-term expat. Botswana ranked 34th globally on the 2025 Transparency International Corruption Perceptions Index - the least corrupt country in Africa. The World Bank Governance Indicators consistently rate Botswana in the top quartile globally for rule of law, government effectiveness, and voice and accountability. Courts work. Contracts are enforceable. Property rights are real. This is not something you can take for granted anywhere else on the continent.[11]

Visas and Residency: More Options Than You Think

Botswana's immigration framework covers five meaningful routes for an internationally mobile professional. Most nationalities get 90 days visa-free; the work permit is the standard professional route; and the new Remote Work Visa covers the remote worker case explicitly.

Visa-Free Entry

Most EU, UK, US, Australian, Canadian, and Commonwealth passport holders enter Botswana visa-free for 90 days on a standard tourist/visitor entry. Requirements: valid passport (6+ months beyond intended stay), proof of onward travel, proof of funds.[12]

Extensions to the 90-day entry are possible but cumbersome - the Department of Immigration reviews each case. The Remote Work Visa is the correct route for anyone who wants to stay longer for remote work purposes.

Remote Work Visa (Launched 2024)

Botswana's dedicated remote worker permit.[5]

Requirements:

  • Minimum income: USD 3,000/month (USD 36,000/year) from remote employment or business outside Botswana
  • Valid international health insurance
  • Clean criminal record (home country police clearance + apostille)
  • Proof of accommodation in Botswana
  • Valid passport (6+ months)

Terms:[5]

  • Initial validity: 12 months, renewable annually
  • Application fee: BWP 1,000-2,000 (~USD 75-150)
  • Apply through a Botswana High Commission or in-country at the Department of Immigration
  • Explicitly authorises remote work for foreign employers - no grey area
  • Tax implications: The visa is structured to exempt foreign-source income during validity; tax residency is triggered at 183 days, but the Remote Work Visa is explicitly designed to shelter foreign-sourced income from Botswana's worldwide tax net[5]

Processing time: Not yet fully standardised - allow 4-8 weeks from application date.

Employment Permit (EP)

The standard professional work permit for foreign nationals employed by Botswana-registered companies.[13]

Four categories:[13]

  1. Employment Permit (EP) - foreign national employed by a local company; employer applies to the National Immigration Selection Board (NISB); requires justification that the role cannot be filled locally; validity 1-3 years; renewable
  2. Self-Employment Permit (SEP) - for entrepreneurs establishing their own businesses; requires business plan, proof of investment capital, company registration, police clearance; NISB review[13]
  3. Short-Term Permit (STP) - for consultants, business visitors, short-term assignments; 2-5 working days processing; 4 sub-types: Business, Tourism, Volunteer, Work[13]
  4. Intra-Company Transfer Permit (ICT) - for senior managers, specialists, and trainees within multinationals transferring to Botswana; minimum 6 months' prior employment with the company required; 2-year validity, renewable[13]

Work permit documentation (standard EP):[14]

  • Job advert (not older than 6 months) - proving the employer attempted to fill the role locally
  • Contract of employment and letter of appointment
  • CV and certified copies of educational certificates
  • Certified copy of passport biographic page
  • 2 passport-sized photographs (white background)
  • Police clearance from home country
  • Clearance from relevant professional regulatory body (doctors → Botswana Health Professions Council; accountants → BICA; engineers → Engineers Registration Board; teachers → Ministry of Education)[14]
  • Medical certificate

Processing time: 14 working days for work permits (official); renewals must be submitted at least 6 months before expiry.[14]

Residence Permit

All non-citizens staying beyond their visitor entry need a residence permit, held alongside (or after) a work permit. Categories: immigrant, spouse of citizen, dependent, student.[15][16]

Documentation (immigrant category):[16]

  • Form 15 and Form 3 (immigration department forms)
  • Certified passport copy, birth certificate, marriage certificate if applicable
  • Proof of financial support and bank statement
  • One passport photograph

Processing time: 30 working days. Apply at any Immigration office (Head Office: Block 8, Government Enclave, Khama Crescent, Gaborone; Toll Free: 0800 600 777).[16]

Citizenship: The New Dual Citizenship Reality - and What It Actually Means

Botswana's citizenship law went through a seismic shift between 2022 and 2026, and the implications for naturalising expats are still settling.

The Legal Shift in Three Steps

Step 1 - 2022 High Court ruling: A landmark court decision struck down Section 15(1) and 15(4) of the Citizenship Act, which had required Batswana with dual citizenship to renounce their foreign nationality before age 21. The court found these provisions unconstitutional.[17]

Step 2 - August 2024 amendment: The National Registration law was amended to implement the court's decision. Dual citizenship became operational for Batswana by birth and descent. The Minister of Home Affairs confirmed 301 applications were received and approved under the new framework within months.[18][17]

Step 3 - December 2025 Citizenship Amendment Bill: Parliament voted to pass the Citizenship Amendment Bill 2025, which extends multiple citizenship rights specifically to investors and high-value migrants across key sectors: manufacturing, mining, energy, agriculture, infrastructure, financial services, tourism, technology, health, sport, and green energy. The Bill was at committee stage as of July 2026 - not yet signed into law. Standard naturalisation (through long residence) still currently requires renouncing foreign citizenship at the point of application, but the legislative direction is firmly toward multiple citizenship for qualifying migrants.[19][4][18]

Naturalisation Through Long Residence

The standard pathway to citizenship remains:[19]

Requirements:

  • Aggregate residence of at least 10 years in Botswana
  • 12 consecutive months of continuous residence immediately preceding the application
  • Employment, self-employment, or investment throughout the residence period
  • Clean criminal record (police clearance)
  • Application to the Department of Immigration and Citizenship (Form L)
  • Interview with immigration authorities

Supporting documents (employees):[19]

  • Certified copies of 10 years of residence and work permits
  • Contract of employment and certified valid work permit
  • CV and summary of assets and investments
  • Educational certificates
  • Birth certificate, passport, marriage certificate (if applicable)

Timeline: Approximately 18 months from application to certificate of naturalisation.[19]

The dual citizenship question at naturalization: Under current law, successful applicants are required to renounce their foreign citizenship before the certificate is issued. However, the Citizenship Amendment Bill 2025 is specifically designed to change this for investor-category applicants. Track its parliamentary progress before submitting any application.[19]

Citizenship by Investment (CBI)

The most significant development in Botswana's residency-to-citizenship landscape in 2026.

The programme was announced at IMI Connect Rome in late 2025, with Arton Capital appointed as a licensed agent.[6]

Key parameters as announced:[6]

  • Investment type (initial launch): Donation option only
  • Investment amount: USD 75,000-90,000 donation
  • Target processing time: 60 days (subject to due diligence completion)
  • Legal prerequisite: The Citizenship Amendment Bill 2025 must be signed into law before the programme can accept formal applications - the dual citizenship permission is a structural requirement

Status as of July 2026: The CBI programme is in pre-launch phase. The Citizenship Amendment Bill passed its second reading in Parliament in December 2025 and was at committee stage. Until it receives Presidential assent and is gazetted, formal CBI applications cannot proceed. Expressions of interest have already exceeded 600.[4][6]

This is a programme to monitor closely - not one to act on immediately. If enacted, USD 75,000-90,000 for a Botswana passport (without renouncing existing citizenship) would be one of the more accessible investment citizenship options in the world for a stable, English-speaking, low-corruption country.

Marriage to a Botswana Citizen

Form N application. Must have been married to and residing with a Botswana citizen for a sustained period (requirements mirror the general naturalisation threshold). Spouse's support letter, marriage certificate, residence permit history, and police clearance required.[19]

Taxes: Territorial at Source, 0% on Foreign Income Under the Right Structure

Botswana's tax system is administered by the Botswana Unified Revenue Service (BURS), and it operates on a territorial basis - income is taxable in Botswana only if its source is within Botswana.[3]

What this means in practice: Foreign-sourced income - dividends, salary payments, business profits from operations entirely outside Botswana - is generally exempt from Botswana tax. This is the headline that attracts remote workers and investors. The nuances matter, but the structural point is real.[2]

Personal Income Tax (PIT Rates, 2026)

Resident individuals:[3]

Annual Income (BWP) Rate on Excess
0 - 48,000 0% (tax-free threshold)
48,001 - 84,000 5%
84,001 - 120,000 12.5%
120,001 - 156,000 18.75%
Over 156,000 25%

At BWP 156,000 (~USD 11,400/year), only BWP 13,050 of tax has accrued before the 25% top rate kicks in. The effective rate is therefore very low for most mid-income expats.[20]

Non-resident individuals (no tax-free threshold):[3]

Annual Income (BWP) Rate on Excess
0 - 84,000 5%
84,001 - 120,000 12.5%
120,001 - 156,000 18.75%
Over 156,000 25%

Tax Residency

183 days of physical presence in a tax year triggers Botswana tax residency. Tax residents are taxable on income from Botswana sources only - the territorial system means foreign-sourced income remains outside the net unless it is remitted to Botswana and characterised as Botswana-source income. The Remote Work Visa is specifically structured to reinforce this exemption for foreign employment income.[3][5]

Other Key Taxes

Tax Rate
VAT (Value Added Tax) 14%[21]
Corporate tax (resident companies) 22% (standard)[20]
Capital gains tax (listed shares - 2024 reform) 0% (CGT on listed shares abolished in 2024)[11]
Capital gains tax (property) Progressive, up to 25%[2]
Dividend withholding tax (non-residents) 10%[3]
Interest / royalty withholding tax (non-residents) 15%[3]
Capital Transfer Tax (inheritance / gifts) Up to 5% (progressive)[2]
Social security contributions None - no mandatory social security system[2]
Property tax None[2]

No mandatory social security is significant: in most European countries, employer and employee social contributions add 20-35% on top of income tax. In Botswana, the gross-to-net comparison is clean. What you see in the PIT brackets is what you pay.

Double Taxation Agreements: Botswana has DTAs with multiple countries including the UK, South Africa, Mauritius, Zimbabwe, Namibia, Sweden, France, India, Seychelles, and others. Check whether your home country has a treaty - it directly affects how cross-border income flows are treated.[21]

Cost of Living: Cheaper Than Johannesburg, Pricier Than Lusaka

Botswana is affordable by global and most African expat hub standards. Gaborone is comfortably cheaper than Cape Town, Johannesburg, and Nairobi - and materially cheaper than any European or Middle Eastern expat city.

Monthly budgets (Gaborone, 2026):[22][23]

Lifestyle Monthly Cost (USD) What It Covers
Frugal single ~USD 700-900 Shared housing, local food, combis (minibuses)
Comfortable single expat ~USD 1,000-1,500[1] Private 1-BR (central), dining mix, car
Western lifestyle ~USD 2,000-3,000 Premium apartment, frequent dining, imported goods
Family of four (no school fees) ~USD 2,500-4,000 3-BR house, car, domestic help

Exchange rate: USD 1 ≈ BWP 13.8 (July 2026, approximate)

Rent in Gaborone and Other Cities (2026)

Property Type / Location Monthly Rent (USD)
1-BR apartment (Gaborone city centre) USD 500-720[22]
1-BR apartment (Gaborone outside centre) USD 250-360[22]
2-BR apartment (central Gaborone) USD 700-1,000[22]
3-BR house (Gaborone, expat standard) USD 900-1,280[23]
3-BR house (outside centre, Gaborone) USD 650-900[23]
Accommodation (Maun / Kasane, basic) USD 200-500/month

Popular expat neighbourhoods in Gaborone:[24]

  • Extension 9 / Block 10 - well-established residential areas near the CBD; mix of townhouses and apartments; most expats in banking, government, and professional services live here
  • Phakalane - newer northern suburb; golf estate; larger plots; the premium residential choice for senior expats and diplomats; rent BWP 10,000-25,000/month (~USD 700-1,800)
  • Fairgrounds / The Suburbs - central, near major shopping centres (Game City, Riverwalk); mixed residential and commercial; popular with younger professionals

Daily Expenses (Gaborone, 2026)

Item Price (USD)
Meal (inexpensive local restaurant) USD 7-12[23]
Meal (mid-range restaurant, per person) USD 18-32[23]
Cappuccino USD 2.30[23]
Utilities (electricity, water, internet) USD 60-180/month[22]
Mobile plan (monthly) USD 15-25[23]
Gym membership USD 30-45/month[23]
Cinema ticket USD 6.50[23]
Fuel (per litre) ~USD 1.10-1.30
Combi (minibus) fare (city) USD 0.25-0.50
Coworking space (Regus Gaborone) ~USD 180/month[23]

Internet connectivity: Gaborone has functional broadband (40-100 Mbps at good business addresses), reliable mobile LTE, and multiple coworking options. This is not a connectivity concern as it is in Samoa or parts of Southeast Asia. Remote workers report consistent connectivity for video calls and cloud work in the city.[23]

Healthcare: Go Private. South Africa Is 4 Hours Away.

Botswana's public healthcare system is free for citizens. Expats cannot access the public insurance scheme. This is binary and clear - plan accordingly.[25]

The private hospital infrastructure in Gaborone is solid for Africa - not London or Singapore, but well above average for the continent. For complex tertiary care, the standard protocol is medical evacuation to Johannesburg, South Africa - 4 hours by road or 1 hour by air from Gaborone.[25]

Private Hospitals (Gaborone)

  • Gaborone Private Hospital (GPH) - largest private hospital; all major specialties; 24/7 emergency; the primary expat choice[25]
  • Bokamoso Private Hospital (Lenmed Health, Block 7, Mmopane) - modern facility; maternity care; ICU; diagnostics[26][25]
  • Sidilega Private Hospital (Phakalane area) - good reputation; specialist outpatient services[26]
  • MediClinic Gaborone - part of the South African MediClinic group; excellent reputation; senior staff with SA training[25]

Healthcare Costs (Private, Gaborone, 2026)

Service Cost (USD)
GP consultation (private) USD 22-36[25]
Specialist consultation USD 36-72[25]
Private hospital daily rate USD 215-575[25]
Individual health insurance USD 58-145/month[25]
Family health insurance USD 180-360/month[25]
Dental (basic check) USD 25-50[25]
Medical evacuation to Johannesburg (without insurance) USD 5,000-15,000[25]

Recommended insurers: BPOMAS (local, solid for in-Botswana care), Discovery Health (South African, extensive SA hospital network), Cigna Global and Allianz Care (international, medevac coverage).[25]

Emergency numbers: 911 or 999 for ambulance / emergency services.[25]

Pharmacy note: Dis-Chem and local pharmacies in Gaborone's major malls stock most common medications, many imported from South Africa. Specialist or uncommon medications may take 2-5 days to source from SA. Bring a 3-month supply of any critical prescription when relocating.[25]

Safety: Moderate Risk, Rising Crime Trend, Exceptionally Safe Daylight

The numbers are honest: Gaborone sits in the moderate crime category - safer than Nairobi and Lagos, comparable to parts of Johannesburg's northern suburbs, and notably safer than most West African expat cities.

Indicator Value Level
Crime Index (Numbeo, 2026) 51.7[27] Moderate
Safety Index 48.3[27] Moderate
Safety walking alone (daylight) 73.1[28] High
Safety walking alone (night) 34.4[28] Low
Crime perceived to be increasing (3 years) 80.7[28] Very High

The rising crime trend is the most important data point here, not the current level. Gaborone has experienced a sustained increase in property crime - car theft, residential break-ins, and phone snatching - as unemployment has risen alongside the diamond sector contraction. Most expats live in gated communities with private security, have electric fencing or security company contracts, and avoid walking in low-lit areas at night.[28]

The practical security setup for Gaborone expats:

  • Gated compound or estate with security guard - standard for most expat-grade rentals
  • Armed response subscription: ADT, G4S, and Botswana Guarding Services all operate; ~BWP 200-400/month (~USD 15-30)
  • Keep car windows up and doors locked in traffic
  • Phone snatching is the most common crime targeting foreigners - do not use your phone visibly at traffic lights or in market areas

The village and smaller city story: Outside Gaborone, Botswana is remarkably safe. Francistown, Maun, and Kasane all report materially lower crime levels. Rural Botswana - particularly near national parks - has very low crime. The crime issue is concentrated in peri-urban Gaborone.

Property: Foreigners Can Buy Freehold. The Transfer Duty Is 10%.

Botswana has one of the clearer foreign property ownership frameworks in Africa - and since a 2023 reform, one of the most attractive transfer duty structures.

Land Types

Category Description Foreigners Can Buy?
Freehold Full title, Deeds Registry registered Yes - with standard process[29]
Tribal / Customary (74% of land) Governed by Tribal Land Act 2022; leasehold only Restricted - sale to non-citizens subject to Land Board approval; long-term lease (49-99 years) is the standard route[30][31]
State land Government owned No

The critical restriction: Foreigners cannot purchase unimproved land or plots unless freehold. You can buy a built freehold house or apartment. You cannot buy a raw plot to build on unless it is registered as freehold. For development, long-term tribal land leasehold is the standard route - via the relevant Land Board.[29]

Transfer Duty (2023 Reform - Still in Force)

Buyer Transfer Duty
Botswana citizen (first home, up to BWP 1.5M) 0%
Botswana citizen (above BWP 1.5M) 5%
Foreign buyer (up to BWP 2 million) 10%[32]
Foreign buyer (above BWP 2 million) 15%[32]

Before the May 2023 reform, foreign buyers paid 30% transfer duty - an effective bar on the market. The new 10%/15% structure, while still higher than citizen rates, has opened the Gaborone property market to genuine foreign participation. Foreign buyers in 2026 typically target premium apartments or larger houses in the BWP 4M-8M range (~USD 290,000-580,000).[32]

Property Market Overview (Gaborone, 2026)

Property Type / Area Approximate Price (BWP) USD Equivalent
2-BR apartment (Fairgrounds/Extension 9) BWP 800K-1.5M USD 58K-109K
3-BR house (Gaborone suburbs) BWP 1.5M-3M USD 109K-217K
Premium 4-BR (Phakalane estate) BWP 3M-6M USD 217K-435K
Commercial unit (Gaborone CBD) BWP 2M-8M+ USD 145K-580K+

The conveyancing process:[31]

  1. Execute a formal sale agreement with legal counsel
  2. Title search at the Deeds Registry - confirm ownership and check for encumbrances (outstanding mortgages, caveats)
  3. Pay transfer duty and registration fees
  4. Complete transfer through the Deeds Registry

Engage a licensed Botswana conveyancer. The process is well-structured, but the tribal land boundary question - verifying that the property is genuine freehold, not informal freehold sitting on land with unresolved tribal claims - requires professional verification. Budget BWP 5,000-15,000 in legal fees for a standard residential transaction.

Climate: Semi-Arid, Sunny, and Extreme in Both Directions

Botswana straddles the Tropic of Capricorn. The Kalahari covers 70% of the country. This is not a tropical, humid environment - it is dry, sunny, and subject to dramatic temperature swings.

Season Period Temperature (Gaborone) Conditions
Summer / Wet October-April 28-40°C Hot; thunderstorms; humidity spikes; most rainfall
Winter / Dry May-August 5-25°C Dry; cool nights (near 0°C in July); crisp sunny days
Shoulder (Spring) September-October 25-38°C Hot, dry; bushing turning green; excellent game viewing

Summer heat: January-February can bring temperatures over 40°C in Gaborone and the Kalahari. Air conditioning in your home and car is not a comfort item - it is a necessity. Central Gaborone office buildings are fully air-conditioned. Rural Botswana in summer requires serious heat management.

Winter nights: June-July nights in Gaborone drop to 4-8°C. Maun and the delta areas are warmer. Pack proper warm clothing - the dry, clear winter air means daytime is pleasant (18-25°C) but nights are genuinely cold.

For the safari regions (Okavango, Chobe): The dry season (May-October) is the prime game-viewing window. Water sources recede, concentrating wildlife around rivers and waterholes. The wet season (November-April) is greener, birdlife explodes, and prices drop - but some camps close and 4WD tracks become difficult.

Where to Live: Gaborone, Francistown, Maun, or Kasane

Gaborone - For Everyone Who Has a Job or Needs Infrastructure

The capital. Population approximately 250,000-280,000 urban. All infrastructure is here: Sir Seretse Khama International Airport (direct flights to Johannesburg, Nairobi, Addis Ababa, Harare, Windhoek, and Lusaka), all three major private hospitals, all international schools, government offices, the full banking system, major retail (Game City, Riverwalk, Airport Junction malls), and the expat community of roughly 50,000-70,000 international workers, diplomats, NGO staff, and professionals.[9]

Gaborone is the only realistic base for families or anyone with career or school-age child requirements.

Francistown - Botswana's Second City, Underrated

Population ~100,000. The commercial hub of northern Botswana. Closer to Zimbabwean and Zambian trade routes. Has its own private hospital, functional schools, and a smaller but real expat community in mining, agriculture, and cross-border trade. Significantly cheaper than Gaborone. Direct road to the Zimbabwean border (Plumtree crossing, 80 km). For senior professionals in the mining or agriculture sector, or those doing cross-border business into southern Zimbabwe, Francistown is a legitimate alternative to Gaborone.[33]

Maun - The Safari Gateway

The most unusual expat base in Botswana. Population ~60,000. Maun's economy runs entirely on the Okavango Delta safari industry - airstrip transfers, lodge supply chains, professional guiding, camp operations, conservation NGOs, and wildlife research. This is where safari industry professionals, wildlife cinematographers, conservation scientists, and serious bush-lovers live.[33]

What Maun offers: Access to the delta is extraordinary - the Okavango is one of the greatest wilderness areas on Earth. Light aircraft operations are part of daily life. Cost of living is lower than Gaborone. The pace is completely different.

What Maun lacks: No international school beyond Matshwane International (primary through IGCSE; BWP 48,877/year for primary, BWP 56,629-58,989 for secondary). No major private hospital - medical emergencies go to Gaborone or directly to Johannesburg. Supermarket supply is thinner; prices for imported goods are higher. For families with school-age children needing IB or A-level preparation, Maun is not self-sufficient.[34]

Kasane - The Chobe Frontier Town

Small (population ~15,000), at the confluence of four countries (Botswana, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Namibia - the Kazungula quadripoint). The base for Chobe National Park operations - one of Africa's highest elephant density areas. Exclusively for safari professionals, conservation workers, and those with a very specific reason to be in the Chobe corridor. No international school, minimal medical infrastructure, regular goods supply via a long road from Gaborone. Extraordinary natural environment; minimal expatriate support infrastructure.

City Comparison

Gaborone Francistown Maun Kasane
International airport Yes (SSKIA) Regional Charter/light aircraft hub Very small
Private hospital Yes (GPH, Bokamoso, MediClinic, Sidilega) Yes (basic) No No

Expat community Large (professional) Small (trade/mining) Niche (safari/conservation) Very small
Monthly 1-BR rent USD 500-720[22] USD 250-400 USD 200-400 USD 150-350
Best for All expat profiles Mining/trade professionals Safari/conservation industry Very specific purposes

International Schools: IB and Cambridge in Gaborone, Limited Elsewhere

Gaborone has Botswana's only full international school infrastructure. Outside the capital, education options narrow rapidly.

Top Schools (Gaborone, 2026)

School Curriculum Annual Fees (USD)
Westwood International School IB PYP, MYP, Diploma (full continuum; ages 5-18) USD 5,000-14,400[35]
Maru-a-Pula School Cambridge IGCSE + A-Levels; boarding available USD 3,600-8,600 (day); boarding extra[35]
Legae Academy Botswana national + accelerated curriculum USD 3,500-7,100[36]
Enko Botho IB primary + secondary BWP 62,100-108,900/year (~USD 4,500-7,900)[37]
Gaborone International School (GIS) Cambridge IGCSE USD 2,700-4,000[36]
Newton / Oriel International Cambridge + national USD 1,700-2,600[36]

Westwood is the standout for families needing IB Diploma for university entry into European, UK, or North American institutions. It is the only school in Botswana offering the full IB continuum. Application 6-12 months in advance for entry; waitlists for IB years.[35]

Fee context: USD 5,000-14,000/year for top-tier international education is 30-40% cheaper than comparable schools in Dubai, Kuala Lumpur, or Nairobi. Most professional expat packages include an education allowance - negotiate this before accepting any offer.

Application fees: BWP 1,000-3,000 (~USD 72-215), non-refundable. Mid-year entry possible but space-limited - apply 3-6 months early.[35]

Working in Botswana: Who Gets Hired, and What They Earn

The Botswana job market for international professionals is structured around specific demand clusters:

Where expats work:[38]

  • Diamond and mining industry: Debswana (De Beers joint venture); African Diamonds; Lucara Diamond Corporation (Karowe mine, Orapa area). Senior engineers, geologists, metallurgists, finance and legal professionals
  • Banking and financial services: Standard Chartered, FNB Botswana, Stanbic, Barclays. Senior roles in corporate banking, treasury, risk management; regional Africa roles based in Gaborone
  • Professional services: Deloitte, PwC, KPMG, Ernst & Young all operate in Gaborone. Legal firms (Armstrongs, Collins Newman & Co.)
  • Tourism and safari operations: Camp managers, guides, operations directors, lodge GMs - Maun/Kasane based
  • NGOs and development sector: UN agencies, UNDP, UNICEF, WHO; African Development Bank programs; bilateral development cooperation (USAID, DFID successor, GIZ)
  • Technology: Growing; government digitisation programs; Southern African Regional office locations; remote-first roles

The localisation constraint: The Non-Citizens Act requires employers to demonstrate that a role cannot be filled by a Botswana citizen before a work permit is granted. The NISB scrutinises this. Roles requiring genuinely scarce skills (senior mining engineering, international finance, IB teaching, specialised medical) pass without issue. Generic management or administration roles face harder scrutiny. This is not unique to Botswana - it is standard across the continent - but it is real.[13]

Average professional salaries (Gaborone, 2026, expat packages):[1][38]

  • Senior engineer (mining/civil): BWP 30,000-80,000/month (~USD 2,175-5,800)
  • Finance manager (bank/corporate): BWP 25,000-60,000/month (~USD 1,810-4,350)
  • NGO country director / senior programme officer: USD 3,000-8,000/month (UN-scale)
  • Remote worker (own foreign income): USD 3,000+ required for Remote Work Visa[5]

Your First 30 Days: The Practical Checklist

  1. Get a local SIM on arrival day - Mascom, Orange Botswana, and BeMobile are the three networks. Mascom has the best coverage including rural areas. Pick up a SIM at the airport or any major shopping mall. Data plans: BWP 50-200/month (~USD 4-15) for 10-50 GB. 4G LTE is available throughout Gaborone and major towns; 5G is not yet deployed

  2. Apply for your permit category within Week 1 - The 90-day visitor entry runs out faster than it feels. If you are on a Remote Work Visa, apply from abroad before arrival. If you are joining an employer, ensure your EP application was submitted before you arrived. If you are on tourist entry applying for a Residence Permit, begin the document gathering (police clearance, medical certificate, bank statements) immediately - police clearances from Europe, the US, or Australia take 2-5 weeks

  3. Open a bank account at FNB Botswana or Stanbic - These are the most expat-friendly full-service banks for international transfers. Required documents: passport, residence permit, proof of address (lease), employer letter or proof of income. Processing: 2-4 weeks. Use Wise for inbound international transfers in the interim - ATM fees on cash withdrawals from international cards are high[5]

  4. Get private health insurance before Week 2 - BPOMAS (local) is good if your employer offers it as part of a package. For international coverage including South African medevac, Cigna Global or Discovery Health SA are the standard choices. Confirm the policy explicitly includes medical evacuation to South Africa - this is the most important single clause[25]

  5. Hire an armed response security company - ADT Botswana, G4S, and Botswana Guarding Services are the main providers. Monthly cost: BWP 200-400 (~USD 15-30). Most expat-grade properties already have this - confirm it with your landlord before signing a lease

  6. Engage a conveyancer before any property transaction - Before signing any lease or purchase agreement, instruct a licensed Botswana conveyancer or property lawyer. Verify freehold vs. tribal land status at the Deeds Registry. For buyers: the title search is non-negotiable given the 74% tribal land coverage of the country[31]

  7. Get a Botswana driving licence - Required for long-term residents. Visit the Motor Vehicle Registration Office in Gaborone (MVAD, Kgale Hill area) with your home country licence and passport. Most Western licences convert without a test. Note: you drive on the left side in Botswana (British standard). If you drive on the right at home, give yourself a deliberate adjustment period - the Gaborone Ring Road and rural A1 highway are unforgiving at night, with frequent cattle on the road

  8. Register at your nearest embassy or high commission - The UK High Commission (Broadhurst, Gaborone), US Embassy (Diplomatic Enclave, Gaborone), and South African High Commission all maintain active consular services. Register for emergency contact and travel advisories

  9. Stock up on prescription medications for your first 3 months - Common medications are available from Dis-Chem and local pharmacies in Gaborone malls. Specialist or brand-specific medications may require ordering from South Africa (2-5 days). Do not arrive dependent on a medication without verifying local supply[25]

  10. Track the Citizenship Amendment Bill progress - If you are a long-term settler with citizenship aspirations, the Citizenship Amendment Bill 2025 is the single most important legal development to watch. When signed into law, it will determine whether the naturalisation process (currently requiring renunciation of foreign citizenship) transitions to true multiple citizenship for investor and high-value migrant categories. Check gov.bw and the Botswana Daily News (dailynews.gov.bw) for legislative updates[18][4][19]

The anti-corruption infrastructure, territorial tax system, English-language environment, and the emerging dual citizenship framework make Botswana the most institutionally credible expat base in sub-Saharan Africa. The diamond crisis is a real headwind - but governments that respond to economic shocks with pro-investment reform rather than capital controls are worth watching closely.
